7:30pm GHOST WORLD (2001, dir. Terry Zwigoff, Park Circus, USA, 112mns, 35mm)

9:45pm MYSTERY TRAIN (1989, dir. Jim Jarmusch, Janus, USA, 113mns, 35mm)

Hey we didn’t necessarily intend to do a Steve Buscemi double but sometimes the stars align!

Tonight, we screen two great indie cinema gems, guest programmed by the birthday girl herself, Secret Movie Club Team Member, Marina Sakimoto.

Interestingly, both movies deal with creative sub-cultures.

First up is the adaptation of Daniel Cloves’ famous cult graphic novel Ghost World. Director Zwigoff, hot off his amazing documentary on underground graphic novelist and counterculture comic book artist Robert Crumb, was the perfect fit for this story of Enid and Rebecca, two just high school graduated outsiders trying to make it in a mediocre world they both suspect of its mediocrity. When Enid meets sad sack Seymour (Buscemi) she decides to help him with his romantic life.

A fascinating snapshot of too smart for their own good jaded teenagers at the end of the endlessly innocent 1990’s, Ghost World also captures the loneliness and isolation that comes from folks who just can’t force themselves to play the game.

We follow this up with Jim Jarmusch’s third movie, a wonderful one night journey into the rock and roll and blues nocturnal landscape of Memphis, Tennessee.

Mystery Train plays as part Down By Law and part Night on Earth while settling into wonderful rhythms all its own. Mystery Train tells three stories of outsiders and misfits wandering around nighttime Memphis in search of Elvis, love, music, a place to sleep. Jarmusch interweaves the three stories in clever ways while staying true to his deadpan comic sensibilities of his first period.

Come join us for two great movies of too cool for school hip outcasts just trying to find their version of the American dream. Both on 35mm!

Best always,

Craig Hammill
