11am FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF (1986, dir. John Hughes, Paramount, USA, 103mns, 35mm)

John Hughes’ classic high school ditch comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is one of this programmer’s absolute favorite movies. It also belongs in that very exclusive pantheon of movies one could call “a perfect movie” like Jaws, The Big Lebowski, The Godfather, The Lord of the Rings movies, Mad Max Fury Road. . .

This year, this programmer got to wondering, “What day does Ferris Bueller actually take place on?” And discovered through research, it is June 5th. One enterprising cinematic sleuth was able to pinpoint the exact day of the Cubs’ baseball game featured in the movie (June 5, 1985).

So this programmer thought. . .”Why not have a ditch day for whatever reason you want to come up with and watch Ferris Bueller’s Day Off on 35mm?”

Ferris Bueller was born as an act of exquisite procrastination on the part of John Hughes. So the story goes a frustrated producer locked Hughes in a room to finish The Breakfast Club. When the producer heard the clack of typewriter keys, they relaxed on a couch convinced the movie was finally getting an ending.

Instead, Hughes came down a few hours later with the first sixty pages of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off!

If you’ve never seen Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, it follows the adventures of high school junior Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick-perfect) who decides it’s such a beautiful Chicago day he, his girlfriend Sloane, and his best friend, hypochondriac Cameron (Succession’s Alan Ruck) all deserve to have the greatest day of their lives. Not in school.

Cue assistant principal Ed Rooney and Ferris’s jealous older sister Jeanie who are furious for their own reasons that Ferris always seems to get away with murder. And the day and hunt are on!

One of the most purely enjoyable American teen comedies ever made, Ferris Bueller is also a textbook in editing as editor Paul Hirsch has often talked about how much freedom Hughes and he had in shaping the form of the movie because it all took place in one day and the actors never changed costume. Therefore scenes could be completely re-shuffled, re-cut to create the best version of the story possible.

And boy did they ever.

So come join us and treat yourself to a day off with Ferris Bueller, one of the greatest cinematic ditch days of all time, on 35mm.

Best always,

Craig Hammill
