Although this isn't the last Fassbinder movie we'll show (we still have 3 major works upcoming), this IS the last movie Fassbinder ever made.
He died 6 weeks before its release in 1982.
Querelle is fascinating, not only because it's a singular movie in its own right, but because it points to a new chapter in Fassbinder's career that was abruptly cut short by his oft and long promised early demise (a commitment he kept by dying of a drug overdose).
After the roughly 5 year period of mostly historical melodramas kicked off by The Marriage of Maria Braun, Fassbinder's adaptation of novelist Jean Genet's Querelle De Brest was a shocker. A brazenly studio bound, cocaine colored, defiantly homoerotic story of Belgian sailor Querelle (played bravely by American actor Brad Davis) who comes into port, murders, schemes, sleeps with both men and women, seduces, lusts, pines.
Like many of Fassbinder's works, notably Beware of a Holy Whore, The Bitter Tears of Petra Van Kant, In a Year of 13 Moons, Querelle plays like a veiled subversive autobiography of Fassbinder himself.
It's intentional theatricality and artificiality anticipate the equally fascinating experiments of Lars Von Trier with Dogville and Manderlay by almost 20 years.
Definitely not a movie for everyone and almost certainly a movie made by an artist on the brink of psychological and physical collapse, Querelle is still an undeniable work of genius. A movie like no other made by a genius director like no other. In a style like no other.
Fassbinder went out like David Bowie went out with Black Star and Stanley Kubrick went out with Eyes Wide Shut. Rainer left us with a final work every inch as shocking, experimental, revolutionary, and fascinating as the work of his youth.
Check this one out and get ready to get rocked.
Best always,
Craig Hammill
