Tonight, we continue our Surreal Summer series with the 1973 experimental animated feature classic Fantastic Planet.
Co-created by French and Czechoslovakian artists, Fantastic Planet tells the allegorical sci-fi tale of an alien society of giant blue humanoids named Traags who have brought human beings (called Oms) to their distant planet as pets.
The Traags treat the Oms as little more than bemusing squirrels who, when they escape to the wild, have to be culled from time to time to stop overpopulation. Interestingly, the Traags themselves have difficulty reproducing.
When one orphaned Om, Terr, accidentally begins to learn the Traag knowledge telepathically, he hatches a plan for the Oms to escape to a moon they call the “Fantastic Planet”. But dark discoveries wait there as well…
One of the great mid-period examples of filmmakers who understood that animation can actually allow greater freedom of exploration of adult themes and genres, Fantastic Planet has an amazing early 70’s score, wild animation, conceptual sci-fi ideas, and, as with much great animation, a tremendous subtext about the way we humans on earth treat all living things around us.
Join us for a surreal animated classic. On 35mm!
Best always,
