SPECIAL NOTE: Filmmaker Chad Hartigan, like Jim Cummings before him, is joining us for a one day screening of his three most recent movies. His most recent movie Little Fish is actually getting its theatrical premiere at the Secret Movie Club Theater. We couldn’t be more honored. This is your chance to ask a moviemaker how they got their movies made and to hear their story of how they’ve carved out a career in the current tough environment. There will be approximately 30 minute Q&A’s after each movie. And we’ll go quickly to the audience for questions!
First up, we screen Hartigan’s breakout Sundance 2013 movie, This is Martin Bonner. Marked by Hartigan’s spare yet poetic humanity, the movie tells the story of Martin Bonner -- recently relocated to Reno, Nevada -- as he tries to build a new life after personal failure. When Bonner befriends newly released prisoner Travis Holloway, the two form an unlikely friendship that is nevertheless tested by their complex characters. Bonner established Hartigan as a filmmaker with a daring willingness to find the poetry in everyday struggle.
Hartigan followed up Bonner with an even more heartfelt human unique look at adjustment, Morris From America. Staring Craig Robinson and Markees Christmas, the movie tells the story of 13 year old Morris, recently transplanted to Germany with his grieving soccer coach father (Robinson). As Mo navigates trying to be a rapper in a white European culture more obsessed with EDM, his father does his best to be both parents at once. Released by A24, Morris again shows Hartigan’s skill and talent for revealing humanity and personal struggle as it REALLY IS EXPERIENCED.
We wrap up the evening with Hartigan’s most recently lauded movie, the IFC released Little Fish. A hauntingly prescient movie made BEFORE the Covid pandemic but released during it, Little Fish, starring Olivia Cooke and written by Mattson Tomlin, follows a couple trying to maintain the integrity of their relationship as a memory loss virus tests the strength and bond of their love. Again, Hartigan surprises by veering into sci-fi while still keeping his focus on the grace notes of existence that define and illuminate our life.
And tonight is Little Fish’s theatrical premiere!
Join us, Mr. Hartigan, and writer Mattson Tomlin [The Batman & its sequel] as we discuss how someone forges a career in independent film during these trying times. All on 35mm!
Best always,
