7:30pm ARMY OF DARKNESS (1992, co wri & dir by Sam Raimi, Universal, USA, 81mns, 35mm - Theatrical Cut)
Sam Raimi at his best makes movies like a cinema obsessed teenager jacked up on powdered sugar, too many ideas, and a need to make the camera do what no one thought it could ever do.
This is what makes Raimi movies, even underseen ones like his wildly entertaining Western THE QUICK AND THE DEAD, such treats to watch.
Raimi has a kind of in-your-face, let me throw this camera out the window and ramp up the speed, and do some claymation at the same time approach that only fifteen year olds who don't know something is impossible to do would dare to do.
Tonight, we kick off our Halloween-o-thon 2023 (our month-long deep dive into horror, scary, spooky pictures of all kinds, shapes, and sizes) with Raimi's ARMY OF DARKNESS, the third movie in his now multi-media running Deadite series (that started famously with EVIL DEAD in 1981).
After the one-two punch of EVIL DEAD and EVIL DEAD II, Raimi had his sights on many genres and many projects. He directed the Coen Brothers co-written CRIME WAVE and the dark superhero vengeance movie DARKMAN along the way. But just before Raimi would embark on his "there's not a genre I can't do" period, he came back to tie up loose ends with ARMY OF DARKNESS starring muse Bruce Campbell as Ash, the long suffering, but ever strengthening hero whose disasterous night in a cursed cabin in the woods, would turn into a lifelong quest to fight the forces of evil.
Here, Raimi picks up exactly where he left off in EVIL DEAD II, tweaking a few things (which became a joke in itself), so that he can send Ash back to the middle ages to fight the Evil, woo beautiful women, and try to get back to his own time as manager of a superstore.
ARMY OF DARKNESS plays like a kind of bastard mischievous child of BACK TO THE FUTURE and WILLOW. Campbell, now fully in control and aware of the comedic potential of his Ash character, has a ball while he battles Deadites and even himself (!?!).
The movie continues to showcase Raimi's bravura moviemaking and his love of mixing shock scares, action sequences, and broad broad slapstick comedy (often influenced by the Three Stooges). The most comedic and fantastic of the first three, this is the one you can bring your significant other to watch if they don't like horror movies.
And we've got it on 35mm!
Best always,
