We wrap up our Italian horror masters series with a one two KO punch of Dario Argento’s mid-70’s masterpiece Deep Red and his late 80’s masterpiece Opera.

Deep Red, starring David Hemmings of Blow Up fame, is, in many ways, considered the zenith of the Giallo genre. In some ways a jazzy variation of Argento’s own The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, Deep Red starts with an innocent, uninvolved man being plunged into a murder mystery when he himself witnesses a violent murder from street level. Powered by an all-time best score by Goblin (who would also go on to do Suspiria with Argento), Deep Red becomes about the act of trying to solve a mystery or investigate anything. It’s a wonderful examination of obsessiveness that offers a great variation to Vertigo.

We follow this up with Argento’s late 80’s Opera. Based on Argento’s own miserable experience trying to mount an avant-garde opera version of Verdi’s MacBeth, Opera itself is beset with behind the scenes production headaches and tragedies. But Argento managed to produce a bugle blast of a Giallo movie about a Soprano who realizes murders are being committed in the same opera house in which she is rehearsing. Argento’s 1980’s giallos (specifically Tenebrae and Opera) take on an almost meta-tone where Argento seems to be exploring the love-hate relationship between audience and performer, genre expectation and artistic intent. Many consider Opera to be Argento’s last great Giallo.

So come join us as we close out this series with two masterpiece Giallos by the director who elevated the genre to an internationally recognized art form.

Best always,
