Let’s all do our part to beat this thing so we can go back to the complete movie going experience!

One of the most exciting companies around today is easily A24 who are supporting amazingly talented voices making original movies.

Tonight, we screen two of those movies.

We start with Harmony Korine's SPRING BREAKERS on 35mm, one of A24's first breakout hits. Korine has been a fascinating if polarizing figure since his early days writing KIDS then directing movies like GUMMO and TRASH HUMPERS. Nothing if not himself, Korine has steadfastly refused to march to the beat of any drummer but his own.

Interestingly, SPRING BREAKERS was a break out hit while simultaneously continuing Korine's strange combination of unsettling violence, sex, drug use mixed with warm humanity and crazy out of left field sequences.

A group of young women desperate to party in Florida for Spring Break rob a local restaurant and use the money to finance their dream. When they get arrested for partying too hard, they are bailed out by Alien, a hustler/pimp/rap artist, who takes Spring Break and their ascent/descent to a whole new level.

Spring Breakers in a strange way inaugurated a new phase for Korine where his movies (like his recent The Beach Bum) would be simultaneously accessible and still utterly bizarre and unique. And we screen it on 35mm!

Next, we show Green Room, the third feature from wildly talented Jeremy Saulnier who landed on the scene with rocket thrusters at full tilt with his second feature, the micro-budget Coens-esque Blue Ruin.

Green Room ditches Blue Ruin's slow burn family dynamics for a go for the neck horror suspense thriller about a punk rock band that witnesses a murder in the green room of a club remote in the Oregon woods only to learn the club and all its inhabitants are white supremacists who have no intention of letting them leave alive.

The movie then knotches up to 11 when we learn the owner of the club is none other than Patrick Stewart, Mr. Star Trek himself, wonderfully playing in an understated way, a completely ruthless racist.

The movie then becomes a stand off between the resourceful punk rock band and the skinheads. Wildly violent and shocking, also brilliantly crafted and constructed, Green Room is a template for what great digital filmmaking can be.

Best always,

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR OUR IN-DOOR THEATER SCREENINGS

REFUNDS:

We can offer refunds up to 24 hours before showtime. Please request a refund through Eventbrite and we will process ASAP. After that, no refunds. Sorry.

However if something last minute comes up and you can’t make the screening, for whatever reason, just write us at: community@secretmovieclub.com and we’ll offer you complimentary tickets to a future screening.

WHY ARE THE TICKET PRICES HIGHER THAN NORMAL?

In order for us to re-open, maintain health protocols and screen movies on 35MM, we need to temporarily raise our ticket prices. We apologize.

However, if you could look at this as partially helping the Secret Movie Club Theater re-open, make the improvements as we go to turn this into the amazing movie watching, movie making center we know it can be, we would be eternally grateful.

As we can increase capacity, we will IMMEDIATELY LOWER ticket prices.

If you could look at this as all of us being in this together, we WILL remember your kindness.

HELPFUL SECRET MOVIE CLUB (1917 Bay Street, 2nd Floor, LA, CA 90021) THEATER PARKING TIPS:

We recommend that you park just outside our theater. Remember our theater is actually in a beautiful street art alleyway in the back of the 1917 Bay Street building. You get to our entrance by taking a right on Wilson, then a right behind the building. We are the first set of black steps on the right after the big gate.

We will have a staff member on duty to monitor all cars parked in the street-art alleyway at our entrance.

There is also a parking lot at the corner of Mateo and Violet Street, just 2 blocks from our theater, which costs $7 per car.

HOW WILL OUR STAFF MAKE SURE THE THEATER IS AS SAFE AS POSSIBLE:

We will have staff in the theater at all times who make sure everyone is wearing masks and obeying protocols. We will have signage at entrance, markings at concessions, restrooms, etc so folks keep 6 ft distance at all times.

Anyone not observing safe protocols will kindly be asked to leave. On top of this, we’ll be making announcements at the head of each screening to make sure everyone understands the rules & regs!
