Tonight we screen one of the key documentaries of the last third of the 20th century for more reasons than one.
First off, of course, this is one of those rare times where camera and sound crews were right at the best spots at the best moments of an event that came to define and shape American culture. The 1969 Woodstock multi-day music festival not only features countless rock and folk group performances in their prime including Jimi Hendrix, Sly & the Family Stone, Crosby Stills and Nash, Joan Baez, it also documents America's counter-culture youth movement at the height of its opposition to the Vietnam War.
Woodstock has become synonymous with being the height of the Hippie movement, just as the disastrous Rolling Stones Altamont concert (documented in the Maysles Gimme Shelter) a little while later has become synonymous with the end of it.
The Woodstock doc is also famous for bringing together Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker as editors very early in their careers. Their editing work and the relationship they continued to forge here would come full circle when Scorsese would insist on Schoonmaker as his editor on Raging Bull. From that point forward, the Scorsese-Schoonmaker partnership would yield countless breathless feats of cinematic montage bravura.
And finally, it's just a great chance to rock out to great music on 35mm film in a movie theater. So come join us and relive the Summer of Love in one of the all-time great music docs.
Best always,
