Let’s all do our part to beat this thing so we can go back to the complete movie going experience!
If you want to be a great moviemaker, study the masters. On 35mm. In a movie palace.
And there are very few masters in the pantheon of all-time great Charlie Chaplin.
First up, we screen Chaplin's very first feature masterpiece THE KID. A sensation when it debuted in 1921, THE KID not only launched Chaplin out of the world of shorts and into the top tier of feature filmmakers, it also launched one of the very first child stars in Jackie Coogan (who would later have a second renaissance as Uncle Fester on THE ADDAMS FAMILY!!).
THE KID tells the story of our beloved Tramp who discovers a baby with a note in the slums. The Tramp raises the Baby to childhood and they form a father-son relationship at the same time they pull mischievous pranks around the city to make money.
But when the Kid's Mother re-surfaces wanting to re-connect AND various forces want to put the Kid in an Orphanage, the Tramp must make hard decisions to do what's right for the child he considers a son.
Hilarious and heart-tugging (as all Chaplin is).
Next up, this Programmer's personal favorite Chaplin and a movie that is in his personal top 35, THE GOLD RUSH.
THE GOLD RUSH finds Chaplin in absolute top peak form as the Tramp ventures to the Alaska Yukon (though most of the movie was shot in and around Los Angeles!) to make his fortune mining. Instead, a series of mishaps finds the Tramp starving in a snow bound cabin with two ornery fellow prospectors, falling in a love with a boom town Showgirl who doesn't reciprocate his feelings, and eventually finding himself in a cabin on the precipice of a great cliff about to teeter to disaster.
Filled with many of Chaplin's most iconic sequences, ideas, moments, THE GOLDD RUSH perfectly balances the comedic and irreverent with the emotional. This is that mother lode nugget of Gold!
We wrap up our triple with Chaplin's first "Sound" film CITY LIGHTS. Often vying for the title of Chaplin all-time masterpiece, CITY LIGHTS actually is a sound film only in that it has music and sound effects, the Tramp and all the characters in the movie actually continue in the style of the silent movies.
CITY LIGHTS finds the Tramp continuing an unintentional charade pretending to be a millionaire when a blind Flower Seller mistakes him for a rich man. Smitten and in love, the Tramp then tries a number of schemes to earn the money to buy the Blind Flower Peddler the eye operation she needs to see.
At the same time, he saves a drunk Rich Man from committing suicide one night and finds himself the Rich Man's best friend. . .but only when the Rich Man is drunk (he never remembers the Tramp when sober).
Again filled with classic Chaplin sequences and ending with one of the most famous, complex last scenes/shots of ALL CINEMA, CITY LIGHTS is an out and out masterwork.
Best always,

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR OUR IN-DOOR THEATER SCREENINGS
REFUNDS:
We can offer refunds up to 24 hours before showtime. Please request a refund through Eventbrite and we will process ASAP. After that, no refunds. Sorry.
However if something last minute comes up and you can’t make the screening, for whatever reason, just write us at: community@secretmovieclub.com and we’ll offer you complimentary tickets to a future screening.
WHY ARE THE TICKET PRICES HIGHER THAN NORMAL?
In order for us to re-open, maintain health protocols (which includes operating at only 50% capacity), and screen movies on 35MM, we need to temporarily raise our ticket prices. We apologize.
However, if you could look at this as partially helping Secret Movie Club re-open indoor theaters and 35MM film screening, we would be eternally grateful.
As we can increase capacity, we will IMMEDIATELY LOWER ticket prices.
If you could look at this as all of us being in this together, we WILL remember your kindness.
HELPFUL MILLION DOLLAR THEATER MOVIE PALACE PARKING TIPS:
If you are attending all movies on any given day (the double or triple feature), you can go to ADD ONS and pre-order an all day $6 Grand Central Parking Lot Pass. The Grand Central Parking Lot is at the corner of 3rd Street and Hill Street just 1 block from the Million Dollar Theater entrance on 3rd & Broadway.
Folks just attending one feature can also park at this lot and as long as you grab food/drink from GCM you can get a 90 minute validation stamp that will help the cost of parking.
HOW WILL OUR STAFF MAKE SURE THE THEATER IS AS SAFE AS POSSIBLE:
We will have staff in the theater (on both the ground and balcony levels) at all times who make sure everyone is wearing masks and obeying protocols. We will have signage at entrance, markings at concessions, restrooms, etc so folks keep 6 ft distance at all times.
Anyone not observing safe protocols will kindly be asked to leave. On top of this, we’ll be making announcements at the head of each screening to make sure everyone understands the rules & regs!
