Tonight we show two great movies by James L. Brooks who somehow mastered the complex 80's comedy-drama better than anyone else.

First up is 1983's Best Picture winner Terms of Endearment. Brooks was already 20 years into an incredibly successful television producing and writing career (which continues to this day with probably his greatest international success The Simpsons) when he made Terms of Endearment.

Adapted from The Last Picture Show's and Lonesome Dove's Larry McMurty's novel of the same name, Terms of Endearment tells the story of spirited widow Aurora (an always amazing Shirley MacClaine) and her struggles with his equally spirited daughter Emma (the luminous Debra Winger). When Emma marries a selfish College Professor (played amazingly by Jeff Daniels) and Aurora embarks on an affair with her neighbor, astronaut Garrett Breedlove (Jack Nicholson who won a best supporting Academy Award for his turn here), the mother and daughter fight, bond, and face the hardest struggles anyone can face.

A beautiful, nuanced, hilarious, joyful and heartbreaking movie, Terms of Endearment would seem to be a hard act to follow.

But Brooks did just that with his incredible follow up, 1987's Broadcast News.

Starring the incredible William Hurt, whom we just lost and want to pay tribute to, Broadcast News drops us into the high pressure, high reward world of nightly network broadcasts.

This movie is a three hander about professional, hard nosed producer Jane (always wonderful Holly Hunter) who finds herself at a professional and personal crossroads when she has to consider two romances/working relationships with either talented if prosaic reporter Aaron (Albert Brooks, always real and funny) or prime time ready gorgeous TV anchor Tom (William Hurt, perfectly nailing the ambition, narcissism, and charm) who lacks the journalistic ethics of a great reporter but is dynamite for the ratings.

Broadcast News adroitly captures the struggles and conflicts of Boomers in their 30's in Regan's America and plays as a kind of humanist version of Network with a focus more on the individual's struggle to balance work and personal ambitions with ethics and integrity. With a surprise (and wonderful) cameo from Jack Nicholson as an added cherry on top and incredible cinematography by Fassbinder and Scorsese DP, Michael Balhaus, Broadcast News is one of the more undersung gems of the 1980's.

Join us for both tonight!

Best always,

Craig Hammill
