What do Night of the Hunter and All That Jazz have to do with each other you might be asking? Well, basically, this programmer is extremely thankful they both exist. They are, in his opinion, two of the greatest American movies ever made. And for this month of Thanksgiving, we're showing both on 35mm!
Night of the Hunter is still one of the most singular, strange, beautiful, unique American movies to come out of the 1950's or any decade. Directed (for his first and only time) by genius actor Charles Laughton, starring Robert Mitchum in a career best performance as psychotic con man preacher Harry Powell, The Night of the Hunter is a dark, beautiful American folktale.
When con-man Harry Powell learns that a fellow cellmate destined for death in prison has buried a stash of money, Powell sets out to seduce and marry the condemned man's widow (played amazingly, as always, by Shelley Winters) then grab the cash.
But he didn't plan on the resourcefulness or clear-eyedness of the man's two children. Soon Powell chases them across the American countryside as they flee him then find refuge in the home of an elderly woman (played in another career best performance by silent film star Lillian Gish) who is a kind of "Mother Goose" to orphan children.
Soon we realize we are watching a beautiful variation on "The Big Bad Wolf" and "Mother Goose" that deepens into something altogether more complex and human.
Stunning filmmaking and performances make this one of the KEY American classics. Robert Mitchum has gone on the record that this is his favorite movie and Laughton his favorite director.
You can only follow up an American classic with another American classic.
And so we screen one of our holy grail movies on 35mm: Bob Fosse's All that Jazz.
Fosse tells the semi-autobiographical story of famed Broadway choreographer Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) who is a mess physically, emotionally, personally while he somehow manages to continue to churn out incredible work on stage and in film.
Kicking off with a stunning "Broadway chorus line cattle call" opening sequence then plummeting headfirst into Gideon's story, All That Jazz is pure Fosse. The editing is brilliant. The honesty is near complete. The entertainment is all-encompassing. Fosse, like fellow choreographer/director Stanley Donen, never shies away from a complex story BUT HE ALSO never loses sight of the fact that it helps to make things entertaining.
How Fosse makes the story of a self-involved drug addicted seriel philanderer on the precipice of death and a heart attack entertaining (and boy how he does it) is one of the great miracles of 70's cinema.
So come join us for two American classics we're thankful for. On 35mm. At the Million Dollar Theater!
Best always,
Craig Hammill
