Let’s all do our part to beat this thing so we can go back to the complete movie going experience!

All May 2022, we're running a "POLITICS & THE PERSONAL" series. We're screening some of the most fascinating movies about politics, political movements, and political figures of the last 60 years.

We've worked to curate a selection of movies that personalize and humanize some of the most history affecting figures and moments of the 20th century. At the same time, we salute these movies because they often show the complexities on all sides of an issue and avoid the understandable trap of favoring a side or ideology based on a filmmaker's own personal beliefs or politics.

Rather all these movies are great cinema, great examinations, and great watches.

We conclude our POLITICS & THE PERSONAL series with a home-grown look at domestic American politics, the brilliant 90's high school comedy satire Election.

Co-written & directed by Alexander Payne, Election stars Reese Witherspoon (in what is possibly her best ever performance/role) as type A overachieving teenager Tracy Flick who seems to be gliding to winning her high school presidency until Civics teacher Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick in what is probably his greatest role after Ferris Bueller) decides her seeming ruthless ambition must be stopped.

He enlists beloved popular too-trusting jock Paul Metzler to run in the hopes that Paul's popularity will put the brakes on Tracey's rise. However when Paul's independent minded sister Tammy is dumped by her girlfriend (who then gets it on with Paul), Tammy decides to run as a spoiler candidate pointing out that high school government is a sham anyway.

Election, adapted from the dynamite source novel of the same name by Tom Perrotta, somehow manages to be BOTH an insightful look into the bruality of high school life AND a blistering satire (on the level of Dr. Strangelove, Ace in the Hole, Network, A Face in the Crowd, Bamboozled no exaggeration) on American politics writ-large.

As the campaign and election take wild twists and turns and as we learn about the personal lives of the candidates, we come to realize that while Teacher McAllister's instincts may in some way be correct, his decision to try and steer democracy is not.

The results are as complex and thought provoking and hilarious as movies are capable of. Come watch this great American comedy and wrestle with the eternal debate of morals vs ethics vs winning an election vs doing what's right in a democracy at the same time.

Best always,

Craig Hammill
