Tonight we screen two of director Arthur Penn's best movies. Of course he was helped by a Mount Olympus of collaborators:
Warren Beatty producing, Faye Dunaway and Gene Hackman acting, Dede Allen editing.
Oh how sweet it is when talented people all get together to make something.
First up is the ground breaking, fertile soil 70's cinema preparing Bonnie & Clyde. What often gets lost in the shuffle of the discussion about the violent climax which ripped open a pathway to more intense, adult themed movies is actually how character and performance based Bonnie and Clyde is.
Following Depression era and US folk hero robbers Bonnie & Clyde on their killing and robbing spree, the movie also examines the link between violence and sexuality, poverty and crime.
We also get Gene Hackman, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway in the performances that would set them up for the rest of their careers.
And of course Dede Allen's editing careens to a climax that is still incredible to the present moment.
We follow this up with the Hackman and Penn collaboration Night Moves from 1975. Night Moves has crept like a prowler in the night from underseen to cult classic to outright masterpiece status.
A private detective story with very rough 1970's anti-heroes, Night Moves follows gruff, frustrated private dick Harry Moseby dealing with an unfaithful wife and a strange new case involving the disappearance of a young girl which soon drops the floor out to reveal a wider conspiracy of drugs, illegality, and unsettling moral rot and corruption.
Hackman rips through this movie like a tornado giving a masterclass in how to hold the screen with granite face like talent and command of craft.
Night Moves also captures the strange Watergate malaise of the country in the mid 1970's when everyone seemed to be knocked off any kind of moral or ethical terra firma to stand on.
Some come watch two Arthur Penn masterpieces. On 35mm!
Best always,
