2pm 2001 (1968, dir. Stanley Kubrick, MGM, 143mns, 70mm)

Recently voted by 480 directors in the Sight and Sound 2022 Poll as the Best Movie of All Time, 2001 still stands as one of cinema’s pinnacle achievements.

Everyone from James Cameron to Martin Scorsese to Steven Spielberg to Christopher Nolan have cited 2001 as the high opera apotheosis of everything that cinema can do.

2001, co-written by sci-fi master novelist Arthur C. Clarke, is almost certainly the greatest science fiction movie ever made. Shot on native 70mm, taking 4 years total to make from pre-production to final release, 2001 tells its mysterious story of human, alien, and computer interaction across three discrete time periods.

First, we get a fascinating first movement a million years in our past when our primate ancient ancestors first came to the realization that certain objects could be used as tools and weapons and thus putting us at the top of the food chain and on our way towards rapid technological advance. This advance is accompanied by the strange appearance of an obsidian black monolith that may not be of this earth.

A million years later, a similar monolith is discovered buried on the moon. But since the Americans have discovered it, they hide the discovery from the rest of the world under the cover story that their moon base is ravaged by a strange plague. However, when they examine the monolith, it emits an ear piercing radio-like signal that points them in the direction of the moons of Jupiter.

Finally, an American spaceship, helmed by astronauts Frank and Dave and the most advanced AI computer system to date, HAL, (while the rest of the crew are in suspended animation) head towards Jupiter to find out what lies on the other side of that mysterious radio signal.

But along the way, the HAL computer system begins to show signs of being all too human and even. . .emotional. . .

Stanley Kubrick made a career out of taking iconoclastic chances with wildly ambitious movies that should have been impossible to make. Yet Kubrick dared and succeeded in making them.

2001 is, interestingly, Kubrick’s most blindingly optimistic work. For all its irony and insightful views into human violence, AI technology, and error, 2001 ultimately dares to suggest there may life and intelligence in the universe that WANTS to connect with us and help us in our own advancement.

The final part of 2001 remains, to this day, one of the most singular sequences ever put to celluloid. Come see it on 70mm, the way Kubrick always intended for you to experience this massive work.

Best always,

Craig Hammill
